One last site

http://teacher.scholastic.com/tools/class_setup/

A website that assists in setting up seating charts. I know you can do it through Infinite Campus, but it is a nice alternate if you are not happy with their system.

Thanks for a great class everyone!!!

At last, the lab safety cartoon

Ok, it took a while, but the cartoon is finally done.

Another Great Class!

Thank you Chris and Deb for another beneficial class! Everything we learned am already trying to implement. It has really opened a lot of new options which the students have been able to directly benefit from.

I don't know what I will do on Tuesdays now. Don't be surprised if I just show up and start working the computer lab, old habits die hard! Thanks again!

What An Awesome Site

I use this website a lot already to find different sites that would be beneficial. All the other sites I recommended were from this site. What a great resource!

http://www.go2web20.net/

Create Teacher Calendars!

I just created my calendar, and I am fired up! This is great to help you coordinate with you teaching partner. I am very excited to show them tomorrow! Check it out, it will change your life (not really).

Organizing site for high schoolers

http://www.notely.net/

This site would be great for students in high school and college (I was looking for something for my middle schoolers). This would work great to keep organized and they would never loose their assignment notebooks and calendars. You can also upload for any documents on the web. I wish I found this when I was in college!
http://rudder.com/

This is a great website to teach your biological kids some money management. I like the fact that there are parental controls. I think we might try this with our son in a year or two. Check it out!
I really enjoyed taking this class. I am just amazed how much stuff is out there that is free and practical for educators. I think now that I have opened a can of worms. I can't wait to start using what I have learned in my own classroom.

For my last site to share I picked a site called yakpack. It is a site that allows users to meet online and have a meeting or just chat. I haven't played around with it too much yet but from what I saw it looked good. It displays your photo and enlarges it when you are talking. It also allows you to save your sessions to view again at a later date. It is a site worth checking out.

North Dakota Sunset

Interesting Website to Share

I came across a neat website while I was checking out some of the sites that animoto can be embedded to. There was a huge list that showed up when I tried to embed my animoto onto my facebook page and I decided to check some of them out. One that I thought that was really neat is called squidoo.com. This website allows you to create a page that has a message or a position on a topic. I have not played around with it a lot but it looks like a neat site that could have some educational use. This site also allows you to raise money for your charity or cause just by having people view your page. I think that this would be a good site to use to help teach about opinions vs facts. It may need to be viewed before using with students.

Kidthing-A compromise for the Digital Natives?

I came across this site called "Kidthing, at last a safe place to play and learn". I know the "digital natives" people who have always known this kind of technology, my children want to use the Internet and my old laptop. I will not let them hold up in some corner of the house to use the laptop but I also will not sit right over their shoulder to watch every screen they go to.

Kidthing might be a nice compromise.

Last Class!

As I enter the last class I realize we have learned quite a bit in Web2.0. I know how to "Twitter". I learned about a bunch of new sites out there that I never knew existed, and I even know how to put a slide show together (Animoto).

Enjoyed the class and enjoyed working with everyone!

I have been working with something I have heard about but until this class have never investigated. When I heard about it, it was called pbwiki. It is now pbworks.

This what I have done so far. I have thrown some different documents from around my HD just to practice and play a little bit. My vision is to create a homework/worksheet resource for my health classes, and a study guide depot for my P.E. classes.

Websites to Share

After I went back and looked at some of the blog posts that I made, I saw that I did not include a link to the site that I mentioned. Below are also some other sites that I have come across in my web 2.0 exploration. Enjoy.

http://artpad.art.com
This site is very simple and allows you to create a picture much like the paint program on most PCs. You can choose what type of brushes to use and when you are finished it will animate your process and recreate your painting.

http://www.engrade.com
This site is more for teacher use than student use. It is a free online grade book site. There are a lot of neat features and it is a good way to back up your grades.

http://www.museumbox.e2bn.org
This website is awesome! It allows you to create a kind of information cube, if you will. Students can include their own information as well as photos and video. It would be great for reports or research projects. Check it out.

http://www.sporcle.com
This site has become one of my favorite time-wasters. It also could be used in the classroom. It is a site that has timed trivia quizzes. There are some fun ones for entertainment but there are also great geography, language, and math quizzes that students could use or could be used for class reviews etc. (Be warned that it can be addicting.)

Across the U.S.A.

This is a site that could be used to integrate curriculums with Health and Physical Education. Perhaps Geography, Math...
It is a site for tracking students running/hiking miles by using milage or pedometers to trek across the U.S.

Success with Animoto

Well, I had some success with creating my Animoto account and produceing a pretty cool video that I presented to my wife. She was impressed! We're taking a cruise this summer so I had the music and pictures going with that theme.

I was able to set up an account at voicethread but that was about it. I ran into trouble when I actually tried to produce something.

Animoto

I like the animoto site and am excited for the educational version. However, I don't think that I am eligible because I am a building sub. Did anyone else have a problem getting an education account?

I made one with my regular account but it is really short. They said that my videos could be up to 30 seconds but I timed it and it is definitely not 30 seconds like they said. Oh well, my creation still turned out cool and that is the most important thing. Maybe I will still get an e-mail from them granting me the access. Until then...

VoiceThread-Animoto-ToonDo

I created this cartoon at ToonDo. Cheezy? Yeah, it kind of is. I also spent the weekend visiting VoiceThread and Animoto. A couple of my classmates got an email from VoiceThread extolling the virtues of my "Meat-headedness". I also created a 30 sec. video at Animoto on my favorite video game.
It is quite awesome at some of the things that one can do with a simple email address and a password. I have already slated some ideas for my Senior High health classes next year.

Thoughts after class 2

Well, that was certainly overwheming, I'm glad we got the disclaimer at the end saying that we get more work time from here on in. I'm definately still in the mode of processing everything that we learned. I will say that I am very impressed with the Google tools that we were shown. I some ways it seems that we could almost use a separate class for Google tools (suggestion for next year?). While I was surfing I found a few other nice tool that I will share.

http://www.kn.pacbell.com/wired/fil/pages/listweb20s.html This is a cataloge site of different web 2.0 sites specifically for educators. I found lots of intriguing links as I was scrolling through.

http://www.ajaxtrans.com/ This is an online translator site, with English to Spanish, German, French, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Greek, Dutch or Arabic options. Definately a nice site for anyone with ESL/ELL students.

Oganization- Something my H.S. is very interested in.

In my searches I found Notely.net. A very detailed and mobile organization tool for students.

W.A. Central H.S. has spent a great deal of time teaching students to organise their lives. This might be a good one because you can link it to your mobile devices.

http://www.notely.net/

Setting up a blog

I'm going to have my French students blog instead of writing journals--in the hope of their being more willing to write on the computer than they are in a regular journal. I also hope it will be more motivating for me to read them rather than trying to decipher high school handwriting! It seems like blogger is pretty user-friendly. Has anyone used other sites that are good?

Thoughts on the Web 2.0 Tools

I had a great time this week searching through boatloads of web 2.0 tools. I ended up going off on many tangents for many hours but in the end I found some pretty cool stuff.

Out of the five sites that were recommended on our syllabus I liked the classtools.net and piclits. They had great resources and I could see using them in my classroom. I liked the idea of glogster.com but I think that it would need to have a separate education component before I would use it with my students. I felt that some of the images that were displayed on the home page were inappropriate for students to see.

I would still like to explore the xtimeline site. It was down when I tried to access it this weekend.

I also found a really neat website to share. It is basically just a blank canvas that you can use like the paint program found on most computers but it animates the painting after you have completed it. Your picture can be sent via e-mail or printed. I think that it would be a great way to incorporate art into the regular curriculum.

Web 2.0

http://www.activehistory.co.uk/

This link has pictures of world leaders, and I think that the kids my enjoy that.

2nd class

http://www.civil-war.net/ Here is another web site that is pretty cool - works great for Social Studies -particularly this time of year as we are just beginning this unit.

Have a great break and we'll see everybody in two weeks!

Technically this is a web 2.0 tool......

Ok, it may seem a bit cheap to use this as a web 2.0 website, and I know many people have their opinions about it, but realistically SOMEONE should mention Wikipedia so it may as well be me.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page

Wikipedia is the largest repository of information on the net that you can both read and write to. While I advise against my students against using it as a research tool without checking and verifying the sources, for the most part it is a nice resouce. Wikipedia is very searchable for easy finding of topics. Wikipedia also separates some of their more popular topics into their own wikias for easier browsing. A nice feature of Wikipedia is that many topics within an article are hotlinked so that you can further investigate a topic if you wish.
As I mentioned above, you are able to contribute to Wikipedia with a simple account creation. You may wish to do this from home as the school's ISP is blocked from contributing from time to time.

Custom Search Engine

I listened to a webinar tonight on web 2.0. Alan November, one of the presenters, talked about how every elementary school should use the custom Google search engine feature to make searching on Google safe and productive for their students. I am excited about the uses for this at intermediate schools too. I'll talk more about it next Tuesday.
See you all then!

Went for a trip...

I stopped by the suggested Web 2.0 starting points.
Vocaroo: I tried several times to record, could not get any results.
Classtool.net: I really liked the "One-Armed Bandit" flash. I intend to use it in class.
Glogster: Everytime I tried to create a "Glog" my browser shut me down. I tried firefox also.
Piclits: Umm.. Somebody? A little help?!! Was the caption of a picture I sent to some of you. Ask about it next week.
Xtimeline: Very detailed orientated time lines. I was impressed with what it could do.

It was a productive little trip around the web.
