I really enjoyed taking this class. I am just amazed how much stuff is out there that is free and practical for educators. I think now that I have opened a can of worms. I can't wait to start using what I have learned in my own classroom.

For my last site to share I picked a site called yakpack. It is a site that allows users to meet online and have a meeting or just chat. I haven't played around with it too much yet but from what I saw it looked good. It displays your photo and enlarges it when you are talking. It also allows you to save your sessions to view again at a later date. It is a site worth checking out.

Interesting Website to Share

I came across a neat website while I was checking out some of the sites that animoto can be embedded to. There was a huge list that showed up when I tried to embed my animoto onto my facebook page and I decided to check some of them out. One that I thought that was really neat is called squidoo.com. This website allows you to create a page that has a message or a position on a topic. I have not played around with it a lot but it looks like a neat site that could have some educational use. This site also allows you to raise money for your charity or cause just by having people view your page. I think that this would be a good site to use to help teach about opinions vs facts. It may need to be viewed before using with students.

I came across this site called "Kidthing, at last a safe place to play and learn". I know the "digital natives" people who have always known this kind of technology, my children want to use the Internet and my old laptop. Well, I had some success with creating my Animoto account and produceing a pretty cool video that I presented to my wife. She was impressed! We're taking a cruise this summer so I had the music and pictures going with that theme.

I was able to set up an account at voicethread but that was about it. I ran into trouble when I actually tried to produce something.

I like the animoto site and am excited for the educational version. However, I don't think that I am eligible because I am a building sub. Did anyone else have a problem getting an education account?

I made one with my regular account but it is really short. They said that my videos could be up to 30 seconds but I timed it and it is definitely not 30 seconds like they said. Oh well, my creation still turned out cool and that is the most important thing. Maybe I will still get an e-mail from them granting me the access. Until then...

VoiceThread-Animoto-ToonDo

I created this cartoon at ToonDo. Cheezy? Yeah, it kind of is. I also spent the weekend visiting VoiceThread and Animoto. A couple of my classmates got an email from VoiceThread extolling the virtues of my "Meat-headedness". I also created a 30 sec. video at Animoto on my favorite video game.
It is quite awesome at some of the things that one can do with a simple email address and a password. I have already slated some ideas for my Senior High health classes next year.

Thoughts after class 2

Well, that was certainly overwheming, I'm glad we got the disclaimer at the end saying that we get more work time from here on in. I'm definately still in the mode of processing everything that we learned. I will say that I am very impressed with the Google tools that we were shown. I some ways it seems that we could almost use a separate class for Google tools (suggestion for next year?). While I was surfing I found a few other nice tool that I will share.

Setting up a blog

I'm going to have my French students blog instead of writing journals--in the hope of their being more willing to write on the computer than they are in a regular journal. I also hope it will be more motivating for me to read them rather than trying to decipher high school handwriting! It seems like blogger is pretty user-friendly. Thoughts on the Web 2.0 Tools

I had a great time this week searching through boatloads of web 2.0 tools. I ended up going off on many tangents for many hours but in the end I found some pretty cool stuff.

Out of the five sites that were recommended on our syllabus I liked the classtools.net and piclits. They had great resources and I could see using them in my classroom. I liked the idea of glogster.com but I think that it would need to have a separate education component before I would use it with my students. I felt that some of the images that were displayed on the home page were inappropriate for students to see.

I would still like to explore the xtimeline site. It was down when I tried to access it this weekend.

I also found a really neat website to share. It is basically just a blank canvas that you can use like the paint program found on most computers but it animates the painting after you have completed it. Your picture can be sent via e-mail or printed. I think that it would be a great way to incorporate art into the regular curriculum.

Ok, it may seem a bit cheap to use this as a web 2.0 website, and I know many people have their opinions about it, but realistically SOMEONE should mention Wikipedia so it may as well be me.

Wikipedia is the largest repository of information on the net that you can both read and write to. While I advise against my students against using it as a research tool without checking and verifying the sources, for the most part it is a nice resouce. Wikipedia is very searchable for easy finding of topics. Wikipedia also separates some of their more popular topics into their own wikias for easier browsing. A nice feature of Wikipedia is that many topics within an article are hotlinked so that you can further investigate a topic if you wish.
As I mentioned above, you are able to contribute to Wikipedia with a simple account creation. You may wish to do this from home as the school's ISP is blocked from contributing from time to time.

Custom Search Engine

I listened to a webinar tonight on web 2.0. Alan November, one of the presenters, talked about how every elementary school should use the custom Google search engine feature to make searching on Google safe and productive for their students. I am excited about the uses for this at intermediate schools too. I'll talk more about it next Tuesday.

Vocaroo: I tried several times to record, could not get any results.
Classtool.net: I really liked the "One-Armed Bandit" flash. I intend to use it in class.
Glogster: Everytime I tried to create a "Glog" my browser shut me down. I tried firefox also.

I came accross an awesome website while I sat in on a 4th grade class in the computer lab last week. It is a site that has great educational games and applications that you can use in your classroom. The students in this class were using this site to create their own animations. I still have to explore it more but it is something worth checking out.
